Solar SC vs. FC Dallas Youth — need help deciding for my U14 son

We've been offered spots at both Dallas area clubs. Solar has incredible college placement numbers but FC Dallas is the MLS-affiliated academy. Has anyone had kids in both? What are the real day-to-day differences in training quality?

What Level Is Right for My Kid?

Understanding youth soccer levels is confusing. Here's a plain-English guide to help you find the right fit for your child's age, skill, and goals.

⚽ Recreational (AYSO, i9 Sports)

Ages 4–14 · Beginner friendly · Local only

$200–$600/yr
1–2 days/week

This is where most kids start. Recreational leagues focus on fun, basic skills, and teamwork. Games are local (no travel), practices are 1-2x per week, and everyone plays. If your child is new to soccer or plays for fun, this is the right level.

Low cost No tryouts Everyone plays

🏅 Competitive / Travel (State Leagues, NPL)

Ages 9–18 · Tryout required · Regional travel

$1,200–$5,000/yr
3–4 days/week

For kids who love soccer and want more competitive play. Teams travel within the state or region for games. Tryouts are required. Coaching is more structured with a development plan. This is the biggest level by participation — most serious young players are here.

Tryout required 2–4 hour travel College pathway starts here

⚡ National Elite (ECNL, Girls Academy, NPL Natl)

Ages 11–19 · Highly selective · National travel

$3,000–$10,000/yr
4–5 days/week

The highest non-professional tier. ECNL and Girls Academy are the most recognized pathways to college soccer. Teams fly to showcases and tournaments nationally. Coaching staff are often former professionals. College scouts attend games regularly. Significant family investment in time and money.

Highly selective National fly-to travel Strong college pathway

🏆 Elite Academy (MLS Next, NWSL Academy)

Ages 12–19 · Invitation/tryout · Professional pathway

Free – $3,000/yr
5–6 days/week

The top of the pyramid. MLS Next academies are affiliated with professional clubs and are often tuition-free because the club invests in developing future pros. These are the most selective programs in the country. Players train 5-6 days per week with professional-level coaching and facilities. The pathway leads to professional contracts, college scholarships, or national team consideration.

Most selective Often free (MLS) Pro pathway
